The Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) celebrated the World Oceans Day, together with Cap Business Océan Indien, today Friday 9 June 2023.
Some 25 students from the École de Fatima participated in the Sand watch Project by the UNESCO at the Anse-la-Raie public beach, in collaboration with the Association pour le Développement Durable (ADD) and the Marine Discovery Centre of the Group Attitude Hotel.
The objective of the Sand Watch project is to improve understanding of the sea through fun activities such as the collection of scientific data.
Mr. Sachooda Ragoonaden, President of the ADD, sensitised students on the need to preserve the ocean and the beaches.
Participants were briefed on major environmental threats, namely climate change, erosion, and pollution.
Mr. Yashvin Neehaul, Chargé de Mission, Économie Bleue at Cap Business Océan Indien, initiated students to various activities, for example, how to sample sea water to check the level of salinity.
Following activities on the beach, the group headed to the Marine Discovery Centre of the Group Attitude Hotel.
There, participants had the opportunity to learn more about marine life and the importance of preservation.
The celebration of the World Oceans Day aims at informing about ocean issues, encouraging the will to adopt a "sustainable behaviour” and to provide avenues for action by encouraging individual and collective action for better management of marine resources.
