Discussions on the panoply of trade and investment prospects available in Turkey and Mauritius were held between business people of both countries during a Business Meet organized by the MCCI this morning at the seat of the institution. The meeting was set up in the context of a seven-day visit of a high-level delegation from the Foreign Exchange Relations Board of Turkey (DEIK).
In his speech, the vice-president of the MCCI, Mr. Marday Venkatasamy, recalled that it is the fifth private sector meeting held between the MCCI and Turkish institutions during the last three years. He loaded the keen interest showed by the Turkish business people to consolidate business relations with Mauritius. He pointed out that imports from Turkey have been substantial over the years, while exports on the other hand have been nominal representing less than 1 percent of total exports.
His view was shared by the newly appointed Director of Trade Policy Unit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr. Narainduth Boodhoo. The latter affirmed that despite the ratification of the FTA, business people of both countries are unfortunately not exploiting its benefits to the fullest. He urged the business community present to capitalize on these advantages and reiterated the wish to work in collaboration with the private sector to reinforce the cooperation of Mauritius with Turkey and Europe at large.
Mr. Ömer Hakan Baki, Chairperson of the Turkish-Mauritian Joint Business Council, and head of the delegation, stated that Turkey intends to set up new ventures not only between Turkey and Mauritius, but also in the regional countries.
He underlined that in 2015, Turkey’s bilateral trade volume with Africa had reached 17.5 billion USD and concluded by expressing the wish to establish long-lasting relations with Mauritius and other African countries, based on a win-win model.
The event was also attended by H.E. Mr. Volkan Türk Vural, Ambassador of Turkey to Mauritius and by H.E. Dr. Kheswar Jankee, Ambassador of Mauritius to Germany.
