The Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) hosted a delegation from the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) yesterday Thursday 18 January 2024. Led by Vice-Chairman Mr. Zhang Shaogang, the visit marked the ongoing efforts to enhance economic ties between Mauritius and China.
MCCI President Mrs Namita Jagarnath Hardowar, accompanied by Vice-President Mr. Charles Harel, Secretary-General Dr. Drishtysingh Ramdenee, warmly welcomed the CCPIT delegation. The discussions during this visit delved into the profound historical and economic ties between the two nations, emphasising the enduring strength of collaboration since 1997.
"Mauritius and China share a longstanding history of diplomatic relations marked by mutual respect, understanding, and collaboration. This visit by CCPIT reaffirms the strong bonds between the MCCI and Chinese trade promotion entities”, highlighted Mrs Namita Jagarnath Hardowar.
The Vice-Chairman of CCPIT, Mr Zhang Shaogang,spoke about the common ground shared by the CCPIT and the MCCI, stressing on the need for enhanced cooperation in light of the Mauritius-China Free Trade Agreement (FTA). He proposed joint initiatives, workshops, seminars, and business training as key avenues for mutual benefit.
“The deliberations centered on a clear collaborative strategy to further investment, trade, and economic cooperation. A diverse set of strategic thrusts were identified, including joint business-to-business events, the structuring of curated distribution and sourcing networks, business intelligence sharing, and collaborative efforts on capacity building and technology sharing”, says Secretary General, Dr Drishtysingh Ramdenee.
Simultaneously, the MCCI engaged in discussions with some ten Chinese businessmen, who were also part of the CCPIT delegation, on trade opportunities. Mrs Rooma Narrainen, Head of Advocacy at the MCCI, led the team in a meeting with the Chinese business operators, presenting an economic overview of Mauritius-China relations and showcasing potential business opportunities.
The exchange of symbolic gifts between the MCCI and the CCPIT symbolised the renewed partnership between both institutions, setting the stage for impactful economic ventures between Mauritius and China.
