The Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System generally referred to as "Harmonized System" or simply "HS" is a multipurpose international product nomenclature developed by the World Customs Organization (WCO).
An exporter needs to be aware of the HS code of each product he is exporting. The HS code is an eight-digit or ten-digit nomenclature used for customs purposes.
An application for HS Code Classification can be made to the Customs Department which has the authority to classify goods in Mauritius.
There are a few items that are controlled at export as per the Consumer Protection (Export Control) Regulations 2000.
