Mauritius is a long standing member of a number of international bodies.

  • Commonwealth
  • Mauritius joined the Commonwealth in 1968 after gaining independence.

  • Southern African Development Community
  • Officially established in Namibia in 1992, the Southern African Development Community was created to bring economic prosperity, development, and stability through regional trade liberalisation and political and economic integration. Mauritius joined the SADC in August 1995 as the 12th member and the first island-state of continental SADC.

  • Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa
  • Formed in 1994 to replace the former Preferential Trade Area (PTA) which had existed since 1981, the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa was established as an organisation of 21 free independent sovereign states "which have agreed to cooperate in developing their natural and human resources for the good of all their people".

  • Indian Ocean Rim - Association for Regional Cooperation

  • The Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Cooperation (IOR-ARC) was formally launched in Mauritius at a Ministerial Meeting in 1997, through the adoption of a Charter, for the mutual benefit and for the welfare of the people of member-countries.
  • United Nations

    Mauritius became a member of the United Nations and its agencies on the 24th of April 1968.
  • The African Union

    The African Union ( formerly the Organisation for African Unity) was created in 1963 to promote solidarity and unity among African nations, in order to increase the standard of living. Mauritius acceded to membership in 1968.
